  • See God

Posted on December 11th, 2009 admin No comments

Last Monday the owner of the Utah Flash, a minor league basketball team, hired a Michael Jordan look a like to travel through town with people who acted like his bodyguards. The goal was to create a buzz around town that Michael Jordan would be playing a 1-on-1 match as Monday night’s halftime show. Fans showed up for the game expecting to see Michael Jordan at halftime. When the imposter appeared, fans caught on. They did not see who they needed to see and that caused problems for them, so they booed and left the game. Read the rest of this entry »

  • Sex Degrees of Separation

Posted on September 23rd, 2009 admin No comments

An AFP story recently broke from London with the headline, “How many people have you slept with? 2.8 million?” Given the limited time in a day and limited days in one’s life, that figure is physically impossible. Well, the article explains that when you sleep with one person, you expose yourself to the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) from all the people that person has slept with and all the people those people have slept with and so on. In STD world, you are sleeping with lots of people anytime you sleep with someone who has had sex with anyone other than you.

This logic makes sense. It follows the same idea studied in academic circles during the 1950s and 60s and eventually popularized by John Guare’s 1990 play, Six Degrees of Separation. The idea is that social links connect every person on Earth. These links form a human web where no more than Read the rest of this entry »

  • False Friends

A recent status update on facebook read, “Some friendships do not last, but some friends are more loyal than brothers” (Proverbs 18:24).

More truth can be gleaned from this passage by checking out different translations: “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (NIV); “A man of too many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (NASB); “There are ‘friends’ who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother” (NLT). The idea is stronger than “some friendships do not last;” some friendships will destroy you! Some friendships will crush you. Read the rest of this entry »

  • A Good One

He was a good one. He led by example. He taught the value of hard work by working hard. He demonstrated sacrificial love for his wife by the way he loved my mom.

He loved by sharing himself. He found space in a crowded duck blind for a kid who couldn’t shoot. He forgot about the trophy largemouth bass and settled for one bluegill after another. He kept one of the worst kids on the baseball team on the team. He spent time caring Read the rest of this entry »

  • How much is Trump worth?

Posted on May 18th, 2009 admin 2 comments

A recent article by Alex Frangos in the Wall Street Journal begins, “It’s one of the great mysteries of the business world: How much is Donald Trump really worth?” That is a good question, but I’m not going to lose any sleep thinking about it. Chances are I’ll never meet Trump, and if I do I doubt his net worth will mean a Trump Tower full of beans to me. Regardless, people talk about such things. I guess Trump’s worth is worth pondering.

As discussed in Frangos’ article, a 2005 book by Timothy O’Brien suggested Trump’s net worth was between $150 million and $250 million. The Deutsche Bank said it was $788 million. Trump throws around different figures ranging from $3.6 billion to $6 billion. That’s quite a range, but who’s counting? Trump’s lowest projection, $3.6 billion, is a far cry from O’Brien’s highest estimate, $250 million. Now someone is flat-out wrong, but again, who’s counting? Read the rest of this entry »

  • Free Chicken

Free food draws crowds. The recent partnership between Oprah Winfrey and KFC is no exception. Download & print a coupon, drive to a KFC restaurant and redeem the coupon for two free pieces of grilled chicken, two free sides and a free biscuit.

    Now that is a deal!

Americans know it too. Millions of coupons have been downloaded. Patrons have flocked to KFC restaurants. Free chicken has been flying out of deep fryers like white pigeons released on wedding days. Free fried chicken Read the rest of this entry »

  • Heckler at The Gospel Coalition

Yesterday as Tim Savage, Senior Pastor of Camelback Bible Church, delivered a talk on “Power in Weakness: The Heart of Gospel Ministry” a young man from the back of the room yelled, “Preach Christ!” Savage kept advancing his argument with grave confidence. I thought to myself, “That was an interesting creative element.” It certainly caught my attention and helped me focus. A few ticks of the second hand later, the man again yelled, “Preach Christ!” He said it again, and again. Read the rest of this entry »
